Fun with Sports Broadcasting |
As you may or may not, KSWH The Pulse 99.9 broadcasts Henderson basketball, baseball, and softball games. This is achieved by sending our announcers to the field with a live broadcasting box that "calls" the radio booth at the station like a phone. Then a person (i.e. me for this story) at the booth puts the call through the control board and it goes over the air. It's the same process as putting a live caller on the air, only for an extended period time. Like, 2 to 5 hours extended.
The announcers call the game, generally there are two of them one to call game and the other to add "color" to the action. It's a lot of hard work, and I totally respect what they do, but at least they DO something.
For the entire game someone (i.e. me again) must stay in the booth and listen to the game. Occasionally I change the volume levels or play PSAs during breaks, but that's generally it. And of all the games that I had to do this the games were unbelievably one-sided. Like, 18 - 1 one-sided. IN BASEBALL.
Yes, I get bored. I won't deny it and if you ask anyone else who has done it they won't deny it either. You can't leave the booth and you have to pay attention to the game to catch when the announcers call for the break.
So, I draw. Yes, I draw lots of things. Generally things that make no sense at all so it won't hold my attention for to long. Here's one of my more coherent pictures:

I have more pictures but they waaay make no sense whatsoever with no continuous coherent thought present at all. I might post them later once I get them scanned! =)
So, um... That's all! You can go away now.

Sync It Like You Mean It |
KSWH The Pulse 99.9 is featuring a whole new Lip Sync Contest. So take a cue from Ashley Simpson and plunge into the wonderfulyl rewarding world of lip syncing. Contestants will be judged by accuracy and performance so start practicing at looking like an idiot being a star! Once you walk the walk and make it look like you talked the talk, you might be able to go home with Chevelle tickets! Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Totally worth the effort, don't you think?
The rules are simple. Choose any of your favorite songs to perform and make sure to bring a tape/cd with your song to the KSWH radio station located in the Garrison Center on April 11th. That's it!
Members of the KSWH Staff will be there along with special guest Marshall Dunn and a special performance by Erika Pope. Celebrity Judges include cast/staff members from HTV's Athletic Supporters: Nathan Looper, Michael Lasagna, and Jason Turner. It all happens Thursday, April 12, at 12:30pm on the Quad.

Convention, #$%@ YEAH! |
Members of KSWH & HTV are going to New York to attend the 2005 Spring National College Media Convention March 17 - 19. At the convention, "attendees will be able to select from more than 200 educational programs." 200 "educational programs?" Hahaha, yeah right. $10 they all get drunk off their asses and pick up hookers at the Montel Williams Show. Either way, they're bound to learn some important life lessons.
 |
Convention? Hell YEAH! |
Seriously though, you get these kinds of sweet opportunities when you take part in the radio and television stations. You get a chance to go to conventions in exotic locations such as Nashville , TN and Las VegasNV . At the conventions themselves, you do go to workshops based on specific media (radio, television, newspaper, etc.) and even get the chance to enter our best work in contests against other colleges.
While the conventions take up a lot of time, they don't take up the whole day. So of course, you get to see the sights at whichever location you happen to be at. This time around, there's plenty to see and do in New York City . I'm not completely sure about all the stuff the guys and gals of KSWH & HTV will do, but I hope they take plenty of pictures! I also hope to then post the best and most non-indecent, legal, and "educational" pictures on the web. So behave and have fun, guys!

Domo Arigato, Mr... Computer |
After many crashes, restarts, cursing, and weeping, we have finally begun the long path of mastering the automation system! We will soon be the master the air waves! By the way, "domo arigato" is Japanese. Hahaha... (cough cough).

Our Faculty Advisor, Doug Gast, fixing our automation system. Thanks, Doug! |
Honestly, I have no clue how it actually works, but at least three people here do. I personally believe it runs on dreams and fairy dust. However, we do control this beast using the easy to use Windows Media Player 9, making it very simple for DJs to mix their own shows. That's right, every DJ pick their own music and just clicks and drag songs into their personal play lists. It definitely reduces stress levels of new DJs, compared to the years where we ran everything manually using two CD players and a mini disk player.
Since everything is now automated, I can also now check the most played songs, what DJs play and other stats left over on Windows Media Player. I'll work on posting these stats for my next update!
